The new music program at the school has had very little funding avaliable and it is in need of much more equipment. These funds will be used to purchase additional musical instruments.
This grant would provide replacement of three four burner electric stoves to make the room usable. The students in a variety of classes would be able to use the stoves to cook and bake, using aspects of many currucula.
The school computer lab is heavily used by both middle school students and community members. An HP Desk Writer 660 Color Printer will upgrade the production capacity of the lab. The color printer will provide quality printing that students can incorperate into all forms of class work for all classes.
This program invloves reading and discussing books in collaborative groups of three to five students with varied reading levels and experiences. The groups are formed by the seventh and eighth grade students' reading selection. The teacher, as facilitator, has pre-selected the choices of high interest books: non-abridged historical novels, autobiographies, biographies, or novels with strong themes that combine the interdisciplinary humanities units.
Special education students participate in a cooking class as part of a life skills curriculum. These funds will provide an additional budget for cooking supplies and food.
Weight lifting equipment and mats will be purchased for a new exercise room at the middl school. This will assist the physical education teachers in teaching strenght training and stretching in an attempt to help students adopt a healthy lifestyle.
A weather station will be installed at Sierra Mountain Middle School capable of gathering weather data while connected to a classroom computer. This will allow students to study our local weather and apply this knowlege during math, social studies, language arts and science classes.
