Excellence in Education was founded 25 years ago by community members in response to legislative changes impacting public school funding. Because our school district, TTUSD, was negatively impacted by these changes, local residents mobilized and created an education foundation to support our public schools.  Thank goodness for their foresight!

Each year the Foundation provides much needed support to our public schools in the form of educational grants, monetary teacher awards and training.  Last school year alone, Excellence in Education funded over $150,000 in classroom grants. Many classroom enhancements including supplemental math and reading tools, state of the art science equipment as well as pilot programs such as iLearn – where students are using iPods in the classroom to improve reading fluency - are funded by Excellence in Education.   We are proud to report the Foundation has funded over $2.5 million in grants and resources to TTUSD since its inception.

The Foundation recently spearheaded Tahoe Truckee Reads, a community effort to improve grade level literacy in our region. As a result of this campaign, Tahoe-Truckee received the 2012 All-America City award from the National Civic League based on our ambitious plan to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. We are ecstatic with this new designation and the partnership with the school district and other community organizations as we begin implementation and plan for the future.
