Grant Details
Number of Students:
34
Program Objectives:

Cross curricular reading comprehension, math problem solving practice and review for all sixth grade standards

Methods of Implementation:

About every 4 weeks,  we receive another math issue for each student in the class.   We use them in class as one of our math centers, and since they also contain review standards, students can review concepts learned earlier in the year.

Measures of success or achievement:

Resistant math students are usually much more willing to attempt math problems found in these  fun magazines  that feature current topics and middle school role models than to do problems straight out of a math textbook.

How does this grant tie into your PLC:

The other two 6th grade teachers in my PLC are also getting scholastic magazine subsciptions so we can collaborate on how to best use this resource. Math standard MR 1.1:  Analyze problems by indentifying relevant from irrelevant information, identifying missing information, sequencing and prioritizing information and observing patterns.Reading comprehension standard 2.1:  Identify the structural features of popular media( eg. newspapers, magazines, online information) and use the features to obtain information.Supporting Documents
