Excellence in Education Gives Nearly $125,000 to Local Schools

Excellence in Education Foundation’s fall grant cycle saw a wide variety of requests from our local teachers. Of the 70 different grant applications submitted, the Foundation funded 59 for a total of $124,588.

One of the funded grants included a new and fun technology called a “Q-Ball.” Q-Balls are “dodgeball” style balls that have a microphone embedded inside. Teachers can use the balls to make classroom discussions more interactive and fun. The balls are tossed from one student to another so their voice can be amplified on the classroom speaker system.

Funding was also awarded to several school sites for cutting-edge science technology. Truckee High School received funding for new digital microscopes. And funding was provided to purchase new spectrometers at North Tahoe High School, LabQuest water quality probes at Sierra Expeditionary Learning School, and voltmeters at Kings Beach Elementary.

Over the past several years, the Foundation has seen an increase in requests for funding of software licenses. The school district now issues every student in grades fourth – twelfth with a Chromebook computer for their classroom and homework, therefore more teachers are turning to cutting-edge learning apps to help their students in a wide variety of subjects. In this fall’s funding cycle, the Foundation awarded grants to purchase apps that analyze student performance, provide interventions, and give immediate feedback to students and teachers. Additionally funded were  apps that provide targeted learning for math and language arts, and even an app that teaches vocabulary through catchy rap music.

The Excellence in Education Foundation provides grant funding directly to teachers and at the district level within the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. In order to provide that grant money, the Foundation actively fundraises throughout the year through several key programs: Skiing for Schools discount lift tickets, Golfing for Schools cards, Dining for Schools cards and through our Friends of Education program. Check our website for more information about discount ski tickets this winter. Golfing cards go on sale every spring and Dining cards go on sale every fall.
